LINCOLNTON –A Lincoln County man has been charged for not securing a gun used by his 2-year-old child to shoot a 1-year-old sibling in the head Sunday, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday evening.
Dylan Sean Moose, 23, of Lightview Lane in Lincolnton is charged with storing a firearm in a manner accessible to a minor, which is a Class 1 misdemeanor. He was released on a $5,000 unsecured bond.
The 2-year-old child is “doing well and is expected to be released from the hospital soon,” the sheriff’s office said in a press release.
Deputies were dispatched to a home on Lightview Lane in Lincolnton at about 11:50 a.m. after the Lincoln County Communications Center received a report of a 1-year old child being shot, deputies said.
Detectives said the father was outside smoking a cigarette when he heard “a loud pop.” He rushed inside, where he and his wife found the two children, who were playing in the parents’ bedroom. The 1-year old child reportedly suffered a wound from a bullet that grazed the child’s head.
“It’s believed the bullet did not penetrate the skull,” the sheriff’s office said.
The 2-year-old reportedly pulled a loaded .380-caliber handgun from a nightstand and fired the shot. The 1-year old-child was transported to Atrium Heath in Charlotte by Lincoln County EMS.
Free gun-safety locks are available at the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.
