East Lincoln Mustangs

Conference: South Fork 2A

Head coach: Jason Otey (fifth season, 60-62)

Last year’s record: 14-11, 8-6, tied for fourth

Returning Starters: 2

Key departures: Destiny Johnson, guard, all-time leading female scorer in Lincoln County history, three-time conference player of the year, four-time all-conference (23.9 points, 10.5 rebounds, 6.3 assists, 2.8 steals); Ciara McClain, center, 2017-18 all-conference (8.6 points, 9 rebounds, 1.3 steals); Tressa Begley, small forward (2.8 points, 3.7 rebounds, 1.4)

Top returnees, 2017-18 averages: Brianna Tadlock, 5-foot-7, junior guard (12.4 points per game, 3.9 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.4 steals); Sara Rhoney, 5-foot-4, junior guard (4.6 points per game, 2.3 rebounds)

Top newcomers: Amara Giles Robinette, 5-foot-8, junior forward/center (3.8 points, 3.6 rebounds); Alexis Painter, 5-feet-8, senior forward (1.5 points, 2.9 rebounds); Katie Cox, 5-foot-8, junior forward (1.3 points, 1.3 rebounds); Brittany Jacques, 5-foot-3, senior guard; Emily Jacques, 5-foot-5, junior guard

Outlook: It takes several lines to be able to list even some of the achievements Destiny Johnson brought to the East Lincoln team over her career, and her absence will certainly be felt. Otey said this season’s team is “very young and inexperienced.” Leading returning scorer Brianna Tadlock is one of the top 3-point shooters in the conference. Otey said his team is putting in the work during the offseason “both on the court and in the weight room.”

Lincoln Charter Eagles

Conference: Southern Piedmont 1A

Head coach: Kim Allen (fourth season, 50-25)

Last year’s record: 15-7, 9-1 conference

Returning Starters: 4

Key departures: Katie Baich, 5-foot-8, guard, three-time all-conference, 2018 Conference Player of the Year (20 points per game)

Top returnees, 2017-18 averages: Felicity Fields, 5-foot-7, junior guard (12.3 points per game, 4.6 rebounds, 2.9 assists); Hannah Hansley, 5-foot-10, junior forward/center (7.9 points per game, 6.3 rebounds); Alyssa Wright, 5-foot-4, junior guard (4.9 points per game, 1 assist); Natalie Hamlen, 5-foot-8, sophomore forward (5.4 points per game, 5 rebounds)

Outlook: Coach Kim Allen knows this season’s team has a lack of senior leadership and is weak on consistency, but she said the team has several strengths. They include having four returning starters, which helps team cohesiveness, and guard play.

North Lincoln Lady Knights

Key departures: Addie McGinnis (10.7 points per game, 5.0 rebounds), Avery Sigmon (8.2 points per game, 4.2 rebounds), Katie Klein (9.8 points per game, 5.2 rebounds, 2.7 steals); Ally White (2.4 points per game, 3.7 rebounds, 2.3 steals)

Top returnees, 2017-18 averages: Dylan Ambrose, 5-foot-8, sophomore wing (8 points per game, 5 rebounds, 2 assists); Ashlyn White, 5-foot-5, sophomore guard (4 points per game, 1 rebound, 5 assists)

Top newcomers: Rachel Seagel, junior wing; Ameah Gaddy, junior forward

Outlook: Last season the Lady Knights relied on a balanced scoring approach with four players averaging between 8 and 11 points per game, but coach Mark Lackey has a lot of holes to fill this year after most of his leading scorers have graduated. Sophomore Dylan Ambrose, who averaged 5 rebounds as a freshman, is also the highest-scoring returner. Lackey said he hopes to improve on last year’s 10-13 record, and he is looking at the newcomers to fill in where needed.
