LINCOLNTON – A Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office detention center inmate facing charges of abusing a 2-year-old child was in critical condition Tuesday after attempting to kill himself, authorities said.
Detention center officers found Michael Scott Constance, 33, of Lincolnview Road, Lincolnton, hanging by a bed sheet tied to the top bunk of his cell, according to a sheriff’s office press release. Constance was unresponsive and detention center personnel, Lincoln County EMS and Boger City firemen performed CPR and were able to regain a pulse.
Constance was transported to Atrium Health-Lincoln then transferred to Atrium Health in Charlotte, where he is listed in critical condition, the sheriff’s office reported.
Constance’s cellmate discovered him hanging by the sheet at 5:42 p.m. Monday, the press release said. He had been in the Harven A. Crouse Detention Center since January 17, when he was arrested on felony child-abuse and assault on a 2-year-old child. The arrest came after an investigation into reports that the child had severe bruising and other injuries after being brought for treatment at Atrium Health in Lincolnton on January 16, 2019.
Constance had remained in jail under a $40,000 secured bond.
