LINCOLNTON – A man charged with assaulting his girlfriend after she bought him new tires as a Father’s Day gift is in critical condition after hanging himself at the Lincoln County Detention Center.
A cellmate found Jeremy Samuel Paris Sartin, 34, hanging from a bedsheet at about 1:30 p.m. Friday, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office. Detention officers cut Sartin down and applied CPR until he regained a pulse, according to a press release.
Sartin was transported to Atrium Health-Lincoln and later transferred to Atrium Health in Charlotte, where he remained in critical condition Monday.
Sartin, of Bess Chapel Church Road, Cherryville, was being held without bond on charges of first-degree kidnapping, assault inflicting serious injury, assault by strangulation and assault on a female.
According to the sheriff’s office, Sartin’s girlfriend decided to replace the tires on Sartin’s vehicle as a Father’s Day gift June 18 after finishing her overnight shift at work. She said that when she got home and showed Sartin the tires, he hit, kicked and choked her before leaving with their child.
“Deputies arrived on the scene to find the victim with a bruised (and) swollen left eye, bruising on her nose, dried blood on her nostrils, and red marks on her chin, cheek and neck,” according to a sheriff’s office press release. “The woman attempted to flee but Sartin grabbed her around the throat with both hands.”
The victim called 911 after Sartin fled. Deputies took her to the Lincoln County Magistrate’s Office, where she secured a domestic violence protection order against Sartin. Lincoln County EMS evaluated her and transported her to Atrium Health-Lincoln for treatment.
