LINCOLNTON - A bullet, shot from a parent’s gun by a 3-year-old sibling, grazed a 1-year-old child’s head Sunday, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department said.
Deputies were dispatched to a home on Lightview Lane in Lincolnton at about 11:50 a.m. after the Lincoln County Communications Center received a report of a 1-year old child being shot, according to a press release.
Detectives said the father was outside smoking a cigarette when he heard “a loud pop.” He rushed inside, where he and his wife found the two children, who were playing in the parents’ bedroom. The 1-year old child reportedly suffered a wound from a bullet that grazed the child’s head.
“It’s believed the bullet did not penetrate the skull,” the sheriff’s office said.
The 3-year-old reportedly pulled a loaded .380-caliber handgun from a nightstand and fired the shot. The 1-year old-child was transported to Atrium Heath in Charlotte by Lincoln County EMS.
The sheriff’s office did not immediately identify the family or disclose whether charges would be filed.
