Butterfly Run

The third annual Butterfly Run, in honor of Lauren Marie Kimsey, is Saturday, May 18.

Butterfly Run

The third annual Butterfly Run will take place at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 18, at the headquarters of Aquesta Bank, 19510 Jetton Road in Cornelius.

This 5K, which features a live butterfly release at the start, is organized by the Lauren Marie Kimsey Foundation for Synovial Sarcoma and benefits the Levine Cancer Institute. Categories this year include running, walking, cheering crew and virtual butterfly.

There will be live music by Davidson Mayor Rusty Knox, an interactive butterfly tent, face painting, tattoos, representatives from Zootastic, food trucks and beer. Friendly dogs and strollers are welcome.

Fight the Good Fight

The Fight the Good Fight 7K, in its fifth year, starts at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 18, at Huntersville Presbyterian Church.

The event is dedicated to serving those in our community affected by brain tumors. The organization is committed to maximizing financial relief for brain tumor patients with grant opportunities.

Each year, there is a race ambassador the event honors. This year’s is in honor of Nick Blazek, who discovered a tennis-ball-sized brain tumor last summer and has undergone chemotherapy in the months since.

The race is held in memory of Michel Garcia, a Huntersvile resident who died in July 2014 after being diagnosed with Stage IV brain cancer. The 7K was chosen since July is the seventh month, and the 1.7-mile optional turnaround was chosen because the number 17 was Michel’s lucky number.
