CORNELIUS – A candlelight vigil was held Oct. 8 outside the Cornelius Police Department in memory of Jace Thompson, who died Oct. 5.

The 5-year-old who became known as “Warrior Jace” was diagnosed with brain cancer last October. He is the son of Cornelius Police Capt. Jennifer Thompson and N.C. Highway Patrol Sgt. Eric Thompson and is the brother of Blake Thompson. During the vigil, the Laura Story song “Blessings” was sung to the crowd gathered around a memorial of flowers, balloons and stuffed animals. The lyrics “what if your blessings come through raindrops,” were fitting as heavy rain fell through much of the ceremony, which concluded with bagpipes played by representatives of CPD.

Services for Jace will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, in the auditorium at the Stanly County Agri-Civic Center, 26032 Newt Road, Albemarle.
