CORNELIUS – Cornelius Town Manager Andrew Grant told the board he and other town staff are constantly communicating with the contracted solid waste company Republic Services, and this year is no different.

Last year there were personnel and mechanical issues that led to $60,000 in fines, Grant told the board during the July 2 meeting.

This year, the company has had to pay $9,000 for hydraulic leaks from trucks.

“We are on the cusp of fining again based on the performance of recycling collection,” Grant said. “It’s not a task we like to do. … We’re on top of that and hope their performance improves.”

Music takes the spotlight this weekend

Music and more takes centerstage this week with two days of special events scheduled in Cornelius and Huntersville.

On Friday, Bella Love will host another 2nd Friday Street Festival in downtown Cornelius. Activities will radiate from the Oak Street Mill, 18725 Oat St., and feature live music, food trucks, displays by local artists, craft beers and more.

The family-friendly festival will begin at 6 p.m. and continue until 10 p.m. The featured performer for July’s event will be the Ben Gatlin Band.

The 2nd Friday festivals are held on the second Friday of each month, May through October.

Founded by Old Town Public House owner Case Warnemunde, the Bella Love organization is an engaged group that spearheads community service  projects and also helps coordinate a variety of social gatherings and events.

And starting this week, Bella Love is expanding its footprint to a new venue in Huntersville.

On Saturday, July 14, Bella Love will partner with the Huntersville Parks and Recreation Department (HPRD) to sponsor the next stop on the Rising Stars Tour 2018.

The event provides a showcase for the area’s up-and-coming musical talents. The event on Saturday takes place 2-9 p.m. on the Ice House Stage at the new Veterans Park at Main & Maxwell in downtown Huntersville.

The Rising Stars Tour will include craft beer from Eleven Lakes Brewing as well as food trucks and will feature a variety of local bands, songwriters and special performances.
