HUNTERSVILLE – Following a run of tournament victories this year, Cornelius resident Devin Gilroy has reached the top of the 10 & Under state tennis rankings.

Gilroy, a fifth-grader at Cornelius Elementary, practices daily at North Mecklenburg Park with Altitude Tennis Academy, with which she’s trained since she was 6.

“Her character and work ethic is in the right place,” Altitude instructor Robbie Mudge said. “She shows up with the mentality of a 13- or 14-year-old.”

To earn the United States Tennis Association No. 1 ranking, Gilroy defeated 2017’s top player Natasha Griffith from Cary in October. The 10-year-old even won a tournament in the 14 & Under category.

When asked what her favorite part about playing was, Devin said, “I just love playing tennis.”

She said lately she’s been working on her serve, forehand and backhand strokes.

“She’s very, very competitive,” Mudge said.
