CORNELIUS – The Hough girls soccer team defeated Lake Norman 2-1 April 29 to assure at least a first-place tie in the I-Meck 4A standings.
The Huskies (16-0-2) got goals from two freshmen: Jessica Brannon and Maria Rayburn, while sophomore Camden Poole and junior Lea Wissell picked up assists against the second-place Wildcats. Hough improved to 12-0 in the conference.
The Huskies’ final game of the regular season is at 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 3, at Mooresville.
Hough grad now Wake coach
Former Hough and Mississippi soccer player Marnie Merritt has been named an assistant coach for the women’s team at Wake Forest University.
She joins the staff of Tony Da Luz, who has coached 21 seasons in Winston-Salem. The 2018 team went 9-9-2 and advanced to the Round of 16 in the NCAA tournament.
Merritt ended her career as a goalkeeper last fall ranking second all-time at Ole Miss in career shutouts, saves and wins.
At Hough, the Huntersville native was an All-American in 2013 and was All-State in 2012 and 2013, when the Huskies reached the state finals.
