Two Hough High School students came in first place in their respective categories at the N.C. PTA Reflections contest.

Kaylee Christmas won first place for Dance Choreography and Drew Gibbs for Music Composition. They both then placed first at the state level May 17-18 in their respective categories, advancing to the national convention, scheduled for June 20-23 in Columbus, Ohio.

For 50 years, National PTA’s Reflections program has helped students explore their own thoughts, feelings and ideas, develop artistic literacy, increase confidence and find a love for learning that will help them become more successful in school and in life.

Other local high school students to place were Reeve Metcalf, Hopewell, third, Visual Arts; Tilly Boraks, Hough, second, Film Production; Aeris Gruber, Hough, second, Literature; and Julia Leeman, Hough, third, Musical Composition.

At the state middle school level, Sabrina Layman of Bailey Middle School took first place in Film Production.

Each year, more than 300,000 students in pre-K through 12th grade create original works of art in response a student-selected theme. The theme for the 2018-19 program is “Heroes Around Me.”
