Huntersville Chief of Police Cleveland Spruill, center, has resigned.

HUNTERSVILLE – Huntersville Chief of Police Cleveland Spruill has submitted his resignation, effective Jan. 4, 2019.

Spruill, who started his role in 2014, wishes to spend more time with his family and pursue other career opportunities, according to a press release from the town, which "thanks him for his service."

He will be taking time off during the holidays, but will assist with the department transition between now and Jan. 4. The town anticipates naming an interim chief of police in the near future, the release states.

Prior to coming to Huntersville, Spruill was the deputy police chief in Alexandria, Va.

Huntersville joins Cornelius in having a new police chief in 2019, as Bence Hoyle is stepping down as head of the Cornelius department at the end of this year.
