Karen’s Cure, which since 2008 has raised more than $50,000 for local cancer patients, will hold a fundraising poker run Saturday.
Cars and motorcycles are welcome for the ride, which will begin at In the Wind in Huntersville and stop at Kickback Jack’s in Mooresville, Tropicana and Mac’s Speed Shop in Cornelius, then finish back at In the Wind.
The cost is $20 for individuals and $30 for couples. Registration and the first card draw will at noon at In the Wind, 15800 Old Statesville Road. There will be prizes, raffles, music and a “lighting the sky” lantern release.
Karen’s Cure was founded in 2008 by Joe Wilkins after his sister, Karen, was diagnosed with breast cancer. He wanted to help people like her who needed help with medical or personal expenses.
Wilkins was killed in a motorcycle accident in 2010.
“It was always his wish that Karen’s Cure help others like his sister and that the charity continue to ‘pay it forward,’” the organization says in its fundraising material. “Karen’s Cure has raised over $50,000, which has gone directly to numerous local recipients. (The poker run) is an opportunity to bring local resources together and continue to provide support to those in need.”
