Lake Norman Charter freshman Donovan Atwell (25) made five 3s against SouthLake Christian.

HUNTERSVILLE – Lake Norman Charter boys basketball improved to 2-1 on the season after defeating SouthLake Christian 75-61 at home Monday, Dec. 3.

Knights senior guard Ian Martino scored 24 points, while freshman Donovan Atwell hit five 3s and got 17 points. Alec Edens, Brandon Webster and Bryce Teixeira all had five for LNC.

SouthLake senior guard Kasparas Gecas led the way for the Eagles (1-5) with 16 points. 

Sophomore big man Johnathan Kurtas and junior guard Tucker Watson each had 14.

On Nov. 30, the Knights defeated Pine Lake Prep, 65-54.

Martino scored 19 points, while Atwell had 18. Sophomore guard Cal Reed, who is averaging 7.6 assists per game, had 14 points.

Grant Wagner scored 18 for the Pride, who fell to 2-1. Thomas Drakeford and Derek Finizio each had 8.

Pine Lake guard Demarcus Johnson did not play in the game.


Hough wrestling 5-0 in tourney

GREENSBORO – The Hough wrestling team went 5-0 in the Falcon Duals at Southeast Guilford Dec. 1.

The Huskies started the day defeating Trinity’s Wheatmore 74-4, then beat Hickory Ridge 69-6. 

Other scores were 79-0 over Burlington’s Williams, 78-3 over Hillsborough Cedar Ridge and 48-27 over Southeast Guilford.

Hough improved its record to 10-0.


LN Charter, Hopewell cheer teams get 1st place 

RALEIGH – Lake Norman Charter and Hopewell came in first place in their respective divisions in the 2018 NCHSAA Cheerleading Invitational Dec. 1.

In the Medium Varsity D2 division, the Knights scored 72.6 points to South Point High’s 39.8.

Hopewell finished with a 64.8 in the Small Varsity Non-Tumble D2 B division, just beating out T.C. Roberson's 64.55.

Hough came in second in the Medium Varsity D1-B division with 65.9. Cardinal Gibbons was that division's champion with 81.3 points.

The competition featured 129 cheerleading squads across all divisions at the Raleigh Convention Center.


Maxwell shines in Vikings win

HUNTERSVILLE – The North Meck boys basketball team moved to 4-0 on the year with an 80-75 win over Phillip O. Berry Academy Nov. 30.

Junior guard Tristan Maxwell scored 27 points and had 10 rebounds. Classmate Shamann Artis had 21 points.

The Vikings next play Saturday, Dec. 8, against Nation Ford (S.C.) in the Columbia, S.C., Bojangles’ Bash.
