The Mecklenburg County Republican Party is going to court to have a budget passed by the all-Democratic Mecklenburg Board of County commissioners declared “null and void.”

The party is asking a Mecklenburg County Superior Court judge to issue a temporary restraining order, the party said in an announcement Tuesday.

The move comes after media reports of email exchanges among commissioners discussing the budget before the vote, which the party alleges is a violation of the state’s open meetings law.

“The blatant violations of the County Commission in having back room discussions must be addressed and the Mecklenburg County Republican Party will make sure that the proper public comment and input is had before the County raises taxes on their citizens,” said Mecklenburg GOP Chairman Chris Turner said in a press release.
