Senior Fitness North Meck

Local seniors participate in a chair aerobics class at the North Mecklenburg Senior Center.

North Mecklenburg Senior Center has several programs happening at the facility, 102 Gilead Road, Huntersville. To find out more call 980-314-1127. The center is open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. 

 

Among the free classes open to all seniors are:

• Chair aerobics, which incorporates gentle aerobic movements and strength, balance and flexibility stretches, is 8:45-9:30 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. 

• Strength circuit, a circuit training class to help build strength, is 9 a.m. Tuesdays. 

• Stretch and Flex, to improve posture, joint range of motion and circulation by stretching and strengthening specific muscles, is 10:45 a.m. Mondays and Tuesdays. 

• There are free blood pressure screenings available when a UNC-Charlotte graduate assistant is not teaching a class.

Programs that have a fee

1 p.m. Mondays Beginner Tai Chi – This class focuses on slow and deliberate movements and challenges balance and coordination. Cost is $21 or $16 with a discount card. Registration is required. 

5:15 p.m. July 19, “Steel Magnolia” Play Trip – Participants will eat dinner at the Egg and then go see the play $20.

12:30 p.m. July 20 Crafts and Creations – Attendees will create a watermelon wreath. Cost is $5, and pre-registration is required. 

10:30 a.m. July 24 Beaded Inspirations – Those who take part will create a beaded eyeglass chain. Cost is $5, and pre-registration is required. 

 

Lunch program

Also taking place at the center is the Senior Citizen’s Nutrition Lunch Program, which offers lunch for participants and various free activities for those who are registered for the program. 

Lunch is served daily at 11:30 a.m.
