HUNTERSVILLE – Members of the North Mecklenburg High School Debate and Speech Team ended their seasons on high notes in national competitions.
Four members of the North Meck squad – senior Sam Thornton, juniors Julian Price and Sophia Templeton and freshman Nicole Sivells – qualified for competition spots in the National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA) National Championships. And Satya Khurana qualified for participation in the National International Events Tournament of Champions (NIETOC)
In the NSDA nationals, held June 18-22 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., North Meck’s top performers were Thornton, who reached the eighth round in Lincoln-Douglas Debate, and Price, who advanced to the final 48 in Humorous Interpretation.
At the NIETOC, held in Denver, Colo., Khurana advanced to the national quarterfinals in Original Oratory. The NIETOC is for individual categories and is considered as prestigious and competitive as the NSDA finals.
