HUNTERSVILLE – A new hotel planned on U.S. 21 will extend the highway’s collection of businesses north of the Gilead Road intersection.
At the town board’s Jan. 7 meeting, commissioners gave unanimous approval of a 4-story, 85-room, 40,000-square-foot MyPlace Hotel on a vacant 5-acre tract on the north side of Shiv Drive near the Pitt Stop convenience store and The Las Mera Tortas restaurant.
The property, 14715 Statesville Road (U.S. 21), is zoned for commercial uses including hotels, but approval of the plans required a pre-vote evidentiary hearing because of the proposed project’s proximity to existing residential uses – primarily the Huntersville Commons apartment complex across U.S. 21 from the targeted hotel site.
According to representatives of the company planning the project, the MyPlace Hotel is part of a new chain of extended stay lodging facilities. The hotel site will be accessed by an extension of Maruti Avenue, which intersects with Shiv Drive behind the existing business.
