DAVIDSON – Davidson resident and Cannon School sophomore Amanda Sambach finished the Symetra Classic at 1-under Friday, tying for 11th, while competing as an amateur in the professional golf event.

Competing at her home town’s River Run Country Club, she finished Day 1 on Wednesday in second place at 5-under, but fell to sixth after the second round. Through 14 holes Sambach was at 5-under, but finished with a par on the water hole at 18.

“Just to come out to be here for the second year – I didn’t play too well last year – to start well and to finish well, it felt pretty good,” she said.

Last year she missed the cut after shooting 9-over after two days.

Playing with Perrine Dalacour in the final round, Sambach said she benefited from being paired with the regular on the Symetra Tour, which is one step below the LPGA.

“She taught me a lot of lessons today,” Sambach said. “She’s a really great role model and she gave me some tips.”

Leona MaGuire, who played collegiately at Duke, won the tournament at 10-under.

Sambach is committed to play for the University of Virginia. The next tournament for the 16-year-old is in Kiawah Island, S.C.
