Retail outlets and residential units are combined in Antiquity in Cornelius.

CORNELIUS – Part of Old Canal Street in the Antiquity development is closed following a sinkhole that formed Nov. 19.

Deputy Town Manager Wayne Herron said the town public works department closed the section of road because of public safety concerns, though the road is privately owned, and it will be up to the developer Finley Properties to fix it.

The hole was filled with gravel to stabilize it, and an engineer evaluation and corrective plan are required before it will be reopened.

Herron told commissioners Dec. 3 that Finley Properties is working on an action plan, but there isn’t a timetable on when the road will reopen.

Antiquity Homeowners Association representative Phil Bechtold thanked Herron for what he and town staff have done and also requested additional police support in the area because people are now going down alleys, moving barriers and driving the wrong way down one-way roads because of the detour.

“We will cooperate in any way the HOA can do anything,” Becktold said. “Our hands are kind of tied.”
