Rev. Carmen Germino

DAVIDSON – St. Alban’s Episcopal Church completed a two-year search for a new rector this summer with the calling of Rev. Carmen Germino to be its new rector. Germino will join the parish officially on Sunday, Aug. 26 after serving for seven years as associate rector at St. James’s Episcopal Church in Richmond, Va. She will be moving to Davidson this month with her husband, Matt, and 1-year-old son, Chris.

The daughter of two native North Carolinians, Germino was born and raised in Nashville, Tenn., and graduated from the University of the South in Sewanee in 2004 and Yale Divinity School in 2007. While at St. James’s, she served under the Very Rev. Randy Hollerith, who was appointed dean of the Washington National Cathedral in 2016, thrusting her into a leadership position of the 2,500-plus member parish.

Germino will bring a combination of strong management, administrative and fundraising skills as well as a joyful passion for being a parish priest.

“I believe one of the most important roles of a parish priest is to encourage and equip disciples for lay ministry,” she said. “I feel incredibly joyful when I get to witness someone doing ministry out of a sense of vocation rather than obligation.”

At St. James’s Germino was an innovative and engaging leader, developing programs such as a mission trip in Richmond where participants “traveled” to parts of their own city in need to perform service projects and a Servant Sunday, which combined a ministry fair with an effort to pack more than 20,000 meals for Stop Hunger Now.

Perhaps fittingly, Germino will be joining St. Alban’s for the parish’s own Ministry Fair on Aug. 26. In addition to a “Meet Carmen” table, the parish will be showcasing its many ministries, including the St. Alban’s preschool, Music at St. Alban’s, the choir, Outreach and its own Ministry of Fun.

The event is open to all who may be curious about St. Alban’s or seeking a new church home as it is an engaging, low-pressure way to get to know the church, its people and its many activities.

Germino’s arrival finishes a complete leadership transition for St. Alban’s who not only is replacing 10-year rector David Buck, who retired in 2016, but also Associate Rector Greg McIntyre, who left this year to become the rector of St. Patrick’s in Mooresville. The Rev. Kevin Lloyd joined the parish on Aug. 19 as associate rector and Davidson College campus minister.

Germino says she can barely contain her excitement at joining St. Alban’s.

“I know the religious landscape of our world is changing rapidly, and many are anxious about the future of the church, but I feel hopeful,” she said. “I believe the Episcopal Church has a powerful prophetic voice to share in our current environment.”
