CORNELIUS – Five students from Bailey Middle School were honored in January for their musical abilities.
Gustavo Cruz and Mia Raymond each were named First Chair in the N.C. Western Region Honors Jazz Band. Gustavo plays the saxophone, and Mia on the trumpet.
Both played in a concert in Asheville Saturday, Feb. 1, and have impressed Bailey Band Director Ruth Petersen in their own way.
“Mia is really a percussionist and took up trumpet for the fun of it last year, and for her to get first chair trumpet, is amazing.”
Petersen, in her 13th year at Bailey, called Gustavo one of the top three students she’s taught.
“He’s playing advanced high school and college-level stuff,” Petersen said.
In their 8-minute audition, each had to learn a solo, etude and show they could improvise.
Of the students in the South Central District Honors Band, Gustavo as first chair joined Anderson Shelkey (tuba), Henry Jung (clarinet) and Noah Eberhardt (trombone).
Gustavo is the first Bailey student to simultaneously make the All-District Honors Band and the Western Region Jazz Band, and also be eligible to try out for All-State for both bands.
