Valentine’s Day can be special for a variety of reasons. Whether you are planning a platonic event among friends or a day of romance, folks around the lake have planned special events Feb. 14 that include:


Davidson College vs. Saint Joseph’s 

What it is: Celebrate the day with some healthy competition as the Wildcats take on the Hawks. The women’s basketball game can be a family event, for couples or just friends. Tickets cost $6.53 for adults and $3.73 for youth.

Who to take: Anyone 

When: 7-10 p.m. 

Where: John M. Belk Arena, 200 Baker Drive. 



Open Art Studio

What it is: The Huntersville Parks & Recreation Department is putting out a call for artists. Participants are requested to bring their own art supplies. The free event encourages painting and meeting other area artists. 

Who to take: Anyone

When: 10:30 a.m. 

Where: Huntersville Parks & Recreation, 105 Gilead Road


Events at Discovery Place Kids

What is it: Youth and their families can celebrate Valentine’s Day with the story “The Love Monster” by Rachel Bright. Afterward they can go to the I CAN Create studio to help children make gifts for loved ones. Cost is included in admission.

Valentine’s Day Singles Mixer

What it is: What the Cup Coffee Bar will be hosting a single’s mixer for those who are still interested in meeting someone in person rather than on a dating app, according to the coffee house’s Facebook page. Light hors d’oeuvres will be served, with a special on drinks.

Who to take: Single friends, men and women 

When: 6-9 p.m. 

Where: 19915 Jane Crump Lane 

Complimentary makeup

What it is: Makeup artists from Laura Mercier will be onsite at Avalilly’s Boutique on Valentine’s Day for those interested in getting glammed and dolled up for the occasion. Availability will be through appointments. There will also be a special discount on select items on the day of.

Valentine’s Day Cruises

What it is: Queens Landing will be hosting three Valentine’s Day cruises to choose from: Valentines Dinner Cruise, Little Red Dress Party and the Sunday Valentine Brunch Cruise.

Who to take: Couples or family 

When: Various times

Where: Queen’s Landing, 1459 River Hwy.


Beginner Belly Dance

What it is: Aisha Belly Dance Studio will be conducting an absolute beginner belly dance series that also falls on Valentine’s Day. The focus will be on the Ma’at technique, the belly dance moves inspired by the ancient Egyptian goddess Ma’at. Students who register for all five weeks will be added to a Facebook group, where they can ask questions and have access to extra video tutorials to help with their at-home practice. The Ma’at Technique is a part of a larger bellydance curriculum developed by Kaeshi Chai of the Bellyqueen School of Dance in New York City. The other two techniques are Bastet and Hathor, which will be offered throughout the year. The class series costs $40.

Red Carpet Valentine’s Day Gala 

What it is: The Valentine’s Day Gala will be a fundraiser to support Know Your Self Worth, an organization that promotes children learning life skills like how to manage money, credit, budgeting and protecting assets, as well as encouraging self-worth. The ticket is $50 per couple. It is 10 percent off if bought in advance. 

Who to take: Significant other 

When: 6-9 p.m. 

Where: On the Nines Bistro & Cocktails, 205 Golf Course Drive


Valentine’s Day Social 

What it is: For the love of chocolate! The South Iredell Senior Center invites sweethearts to indulge in chocolate and socializing. Attendees are requested to bring a favorite chocolate dessert to share. There will be a contest for the best homemade chocolate dessert. The winner receives a $15 gift certificate to Charm Nail Salon on Brawley School Road. Volunteers are needed to help decorate and set up. RSVP is required by Friday, Feb 9. 

Who to take: Anyone age 65 and older

When: 2 p.m.
