CHARLOTTE – A 7-2 finish led to a 2 seed and first-round bye in the 4A state playoffs for the West Meck football team.
The Hawks compiled a 5-1 record in the South Meck 7 conference, tying for first with Ardrey Kell and Providence, their only loss. Using an explosive offense, they averaged 33 points per game, and the defensive only yielded 16 a contest; both figures led the league.
In the second-round playoff game against nearby rival West Charlotte Nov. 23, Hawks quarterback Preston Brown completed 13-of-25 passes for 221 yards and had a touchdown and interception. His top target was senior Montez Willis, who had five catches for 117 yards and a touchdown.
Senior Khafre Brown and junior J’mari Taylor each had 40-plus receiving yards.
West Meck tallied 103 yards on the ground, led by Taylor’s 74. He also had two rushing touchdowns.
On defense, West Meck got sacks from junior Antione Witherspoon and senior Tion Roberts, who led the team in tackles with 9.
West Meck lost to 6-seed Porter Ridge 42-20 Nov. 30, ending the season.
Stuart Cramer (3A) and Mountain Island Charter (1AA) each were eliminated in the first round.
