CHARLOTTE – The Metropolitan Transit Commission has approved a plan to extend light rail from uptown Charlotte to Charlotte Douglas International Airport, and then on to Belmont.
The MTC, which has members from Charlotte, Mecklenburg County and six towns in the county, unanimously approved the plan Feb. 27. The MTC reviews and guides long-range plans of the Charlotte Area Transit system.
The new Silver Line route includes a rail crossing of the Catawba River – blended with N.C. Department of Transportation planned highway upgrades that include replacing the 80-year-old U.S. 74 bridge – which would be key piece of a 4-mile light-rail link to Belmont.
That would also create the opportunity for the future development of a 10-mile connection between Belmont and Gastonia, which would complete the line extension.
