MOORESVILLE – In a game where both starting pitchers went 7 innings but left without a decision, Mooresville slipped past Lake Norman for a 2-1 win March 29.
With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the eighth, Wildcat left-hander Dylan Arment walked Tafton Hensley on a full count to score the winning run for the home Blue Devils, who are atop the I-Meck 4A standings at 8-1 and 10-4 overall.
Each team put their top left-handers – both juniors named Cameron – on the mound, and they didn’t disappoint. Lake Norman’s Cameron Arnold recorded seven strikeouts and only gave up four hits. His counterpart, Cameron Clonch, didn’t allow a run until the top of the top of the seventh inning.
Up 1-0, Clonch was called for a balk with a Vance Anderson on first. That was followed by a sacrifice bunt, advancing the runner to third, then a sacrifice fly to right got him home, sending the Lake Norman cheering section into a frenzy.
In the bottom of the frame, the Devils put two runners on with two outs, but Arnold sent the game into extra innings with a strikeout of Blake Burchett.
Anderson and Arnold each had two hits to lead the Wildcats, who are now at 11-4 overall and 8-3 in the I-Meck.
Mooresville swept the season series with the Wildcats, having won 2-0 March 26.
