Mark your calendars, local shoppers. The long-awaited grand opening of Mooresville’s Costco Wholesale Center is set for June 26 at 8 a.m.
Costco’s neighbor at the Brawley Crossing development, Academy Sports & Outdoors, will hold its grand opening June 15-16, the company said.
The 152,000-square-foot Costco warehouse will anchor the retail complex at the corner of Brawley School and Talbert roads, northeast of Interstate 77 Exit 35.
The people of Mooresville “have been asking us to open here for a long time, and we already have made an impact on the local job market,” Troy Rea, manager of the Mooresville Costco, said in a press release. “We look forward to contributing to the community in many ways.”
Not everybody was thrilled with Costco’s location choice. Neighbors, who cited concerns about traffic, opposed the project when it was announced more than three years ago. Mooresville commissioners initially denied the project before eventually reversing course.
The section of Talbert Road fronting the complex is being widened as part of the project, and a right-turn lane is being added on westbound Brawley School at Talbert.
Costco, which opened its first store in 1976 in a converted airplane hangar in San Diego, had total sales of more than $126 billion in the most-recent fiscal year.
Costco says its membership warehouses “are designed to help small-to-medium-sized businesses reduce costs in purchasing for resale and for everyday business use.” The stores also are popular with bargain-seeking individual shoppers.
Costco’s product categories include groceries, candy, appliances, television and media, automotive supplies, tires, toys, hardware, sporting goods, jewelry, cameras, books, housewares, apparel, health and beauty aids, tobacco, furniture, office supplies and office equipment.
The Mooresville warehouse will be the ninth Costco location in North Carolina, 537th in the U.S. and 774th worldwide, the company said.
Costco has 96 million cardholders in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, England, Scotland, Wales, Spain, France, South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, Australia and Iceland.
The Mooresville location will employ about 200 people.
Hours for the Mooresville store will be 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
