WINSTON-SALEM – Spencer Evans added another state title to his name after winning the pole vault in the 4A Indoor Track State Championships Saturday, Feb. 9.
The homeschooled junior representing Lake Norman High, who cleared 15 feet-even at the JDL Fast Track, also took gold last spring for the outdoor season.
Mooresville’s D’Nahjah Harrell tied for ninth in the girls high jump, to lead a group of five individual Blue Devil competitors at the state meet.
In the 1A/2A meet, Pine Lake Prep’s Ally Richardson was second in the girls pole vault. Her clear of 11 feet, 6 inches surpassed the previous state classification record, also surpassed by first-place Sarah Brown of Surry Central.
Blue Devils, Wildcats at top region’s wrestlers
MOORESVILLE – Mooresville used four first-place finishers to earn the top spot in the individual regional wrestling championship, which concluded Saturday, Feb. 9, at the school’s gym.
The regional winners were Isaac Shaw, 138 pounds; Silas Shaw, 145; Isaac Byers, 152; and Dilyn Roudesbush, 170.
Also earning top-four finishes and advancing to the state championship starting Thursday, Feb. 14, in Greensboro were Samson Sokolski (106, second), Jake Emmert (120, fourth), Michael Goins (160, second), Jaxon McAllister (182, fourth), John Jimenez (220, second) and Tyree Westmoreland (285, second).
Lake Norman was just behind the Blue Devils in the standings, with first-place finishes by Kaiden Fisher, 113; Will Edminston, 120; Timmy Kennett, 132; and Nathan Dugan, 195.
Other Wildcat wrestlers advancing to states were Brody Neal (106, fourth), Orion Fisher (126, third) and Weston Weddington (145, second).
Dugan, the 2018 state champion at 182 pounds, defeated West Meck’s Eric Hudson, who took gold at 195 a year ago.
