Lake Norman senior wrestler Nathan Dugan had a fifth-place finish Jan. 5 in the prestigious Doc Buchanan Invitational in Clovis, Calif.
Competing at 195 pounds, the 2018 state champion had a first-round bye as the 5 seed, followed by a 10-2 major decision over Gabriel Carranza.
In the third round, Dugan fell by an 8-5 decision to hometown wrestler Jacob Good. Moving to the consolation round of eight, Dugan then defeated Alec Hargreaves of Colorado, by a 17-1 tech fall. In the fifth-place match he defeated Florida’s Logan Andrew by a 9-3 decision.
Clovis is a suburb of Fresno, in central California.
“The schedule and experience given to me by @LKNWrestle is unmatched,” Dugan tweeted following the tournament, known as the Doc B. “A lot of hard work goes into providing me and my team with these opportunities.”
Lake Norman girls win 5 straight
MOORESVILLE – Following a 59-35 win over rival Mooresville Jan. 8, the Lake Norman girls basketball team’s winning streak reached five games.
Starting with a win over the Blue Devils Dec. 29, the Wildcats have outscored their opponents by an average score of 54.4-31.4.
In the 60-36 win over Hough Jan. 4, junior Lauren Sullivan scored almost half the Wildcats’ points, pouring in 29 behind six 3-pointers.
Against Community School of Davidson Jan. 7, Lake Norman shut out the Spartans in the first quarter en route to a 50-19 win. In the non-conference game, senior Candis Dancy scored a season-high 15 points.
Pride hold off Langtree
MOORESVILLE – The Pine Lake Prep boys basketball team defeated Langtree Charter Academy 75-65 Jan. 4 in a PAC 7 conference game.
Pride senior DeMarcus Johnson scored a team-high 25, as Grant Wagner (15) and Greyson Houchins (10) also scored in double-figures. Justin workman had eight rebounds and four steals in the game.
Langtree’s Charlie Hester was the game’s high-scorer, however, with 34 points. And Josh Miller scored 12 for the Lions.
