MOORESVILLE – A Mooresville man faces felony charges after allegedly shooting two dogs, one of them fatally, on Dec. 30.

Fred Thomas Wright, 55, of Tammy Drive told deputies that he shot the dogs because they had killed one of his roosters, according to a press release from the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to a call from one of Wright’s neighbors, who said her dog had been shot and was severely injured. The deputies questioned Wright, who admitted to shooting the animals, according to the release.

A search of Wright’s property turned up a dead dog, but deputies “did not locate a rooster or any signs of a rooster being killed,” the release said.

Wright was arrested and taken to the Iredell County Detention Center in Statesville, where he was charged with two felony counts of cruelty to animals. He was released with a promise to appear in court on the charges.
