Vann Johnson, middle, received his ABCD award from Mooresville Graded School District Superintendent Stephen Mauney, right, and Board Chair Roger Hyatt at the September MGSD Board of Education meeting.

MOORESVILLE – Although he’s only been with the Mooresville Graded School District for a little more than a year, HVAC technician Vann Johnson has already distinguished himself enough to be awarded the school district’s monthly Above and Beyond the Call of Duty (ABCD) award, which celebrates exceptional employees.

Johnson, who has previously worked as a maintenance technician at a retirement community and a production supervisor at a manufacturing company, said the best part of his job is the challenges he faces every day.

Mooresville Citizen: What does a typical day for you look like?

Vann Johnson: I usually get to work around 6 a.m. and grab a cup of coffee. Then I look through my work orders and emails for the day. After that, our department has our daily meeting with Mr. (David) Martin. Around 7 a.m. I get started on my work orders. I do everything from repairing our schools’ HVAC units to maintaining them to make sure they are running and in good condition. During any spare time, I lend a hand to the other guys in the department.

MC: What do you love most about your job?

VJ: The best part about my job is the challenges. I like to try to get the work orders finished in a timely manner so that the teachers and students can do their work in comfortable conditions. I like the problem-solving aspect, too. When a machine isn’t working properly, I like figuring out what’s gone wrong and working with our team to fix it.

MC: What are some of the most challenging parts of your job?

VJ: The most challenging part is probably just not being able to fix something quickly or having to wait on parts to get a unit fixed. I know when a work order comes in, behind that there is a teacher and students who are too hot or too cold, and that makes the school day tough. So when it’s not a quick fix, that’s hard on me.

MC: How did it feel to receive the ABCD award?

VJ: I was very honored and appreciative that my work was recognized by my team and our district.

MC: What do you want Mooresville to know about MGSD or your job?

VJ: That we have a very hardworking and talented maintenance team. I enjoy working with them, and we have a lot of fun taking care of our schools. We’re all good friends, and I like getting to be part of such an awesome team!
