MOORESVILLE – A middle-of-the-night visit to Waffle House ended with a police pursuit, vehicle crash on Interstate 77 and drug arrest, according to the Mooresville Police Department.

Officers were called to the restaurant at 11 Days Inn Drive, east of I-77 Exit 36, at about 2:40 a.m. Wednesday, MPD said in a press release. A responding officer reportedly noticed a vehicle leaving the parking lot in a “careless/reckless manner.”

The officer tried to pull the vehicle over but the driver refused to stop and headed south on the interstate “at a high rate of speed.” The officer ended the pursuit and returned to the restaurant, MPD said.

A short time later, the N.C. Highway Patrol received a report of a crash on I-77 near Exit 33. Mooresville police officers located a man near the site of the wreck, and identified him as the suspect in the disturbance at the restaurant, pursuit and crash.

Matthew J. Foard II, 38, of Cornelius, was charged with possession of Schedule VI narcotics, possession with intent to sell/deliver, maintaining dwelling/vehicle for narcotics, felony speed to elude, and misdemeanor possession of Schedule VI narcotics and paraphernalia.

Foard was transported to the Iredell County Jail and issued a $50,000 secured bond.
