MOORESVILLE - The Mooresville Graded School District announced Friday that there will be no classes for students May 1 after more than one-quarter of instructional staff members requested time off for that day to attend a rally for educators in Raleigh.
May 1 will now be an optional teacher workday. May 8, which has been scheduled as an early-release day, will now be a regular school day, the district said.
“We do not have enough substitute teachers and other staff to safely supervise and effectively instruct students during the school day” on May 1, the district said in a press release. “MGSD realizes this is a busy time in the school year, and we understand the burden school schedule changes can create for our families. We want our families to know that we have put much thought and consideration into this decision. Our teachers are not just taking the day off but advocating for public education, including our children.”
