Charles Paul Berger

MOORESVILLE – Charles Paul Berger, 84, died June 19, 2018.

He was born Feb. 4, 1934, in Laurel Springs, N.J.

Survivors include his wife, Zona Kirk Berger; children,

Larry Berger and wife, Pauletta, Kathy Karrasch and husband, Rob; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Berger served in the U.S. Army and was a teacher for 35 years.

No services will be held.

John Smith

MOORESVILLE – John “Michael” Smith, 46, died June 16, 2018.

He was born Oct. 11, 1971, in Mooresville. 

He was a highway construction worker.

He is survived by his parents, Eulies DeHart and Judy Fleming Lowrance; son, Nicholas Houge; sister, Janice Bruyere; and three grandchildren.

Services were held Saturday, June 23, at Shearer Presbyterian Church.

Nan Bolick Bumgarner

MOORESVILLE – Nan Bolick Bumgarner, 89, died June 16, 2018, at her home.  

She was born Jan. 25, 1929, to the late William S. Bolick and Emma Yount Bolick. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, H. Gene Bumgarner, and brother, W. Paul Bolick.

Survivors include her children, Lynn G. Bumgarner and wife, Denise, Lisa B. Bates and Stacey Bumgarner Pierce and boyfriend, Rex Stump, of Mooresville; sister, Joyce Bolick Chapman; and three grandchildren.

Services were held June 19 at Vanderburg United Methodist Church. Burial was in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Granite Falls.

Ronald Wayne Ussery

MOORESVILLE – Ronald Wayne “Bud” Ussery, 76, died June 14, 2018, at his home.

He was born Nov. 15, 1941, in Mooresville to the late Gurney Madison and Ruth Carrigan Ussery. 

He worked at Industrial Dynamics then retired from Philip Morris. 

Survivors include his wife, Barbara London Ussery; daughters, Janice Goodman and husband, Randy, and Rhonda Church and husband, Keith; brother, Larry Ussery and wife, Pam; sisters, Marlene Gilbert and husband, Floyd, and Janice Mayhew and husband, Winston; and four grandchildren.

Services were held June 17 at Prospect Presbyterian Church with burial at the church cemetery.

Ruby Inez Grant Lewis

MOORESVILLE – Ruby Inez Grant Lewis, 93, died June 12, 2018, at Genesis Eldercare in Mooresville.

She was born on Dec. 14, 1924, in Greenville, S.C., to the late James and Ruth Foster Grant. 

She was retired from Chemspun Yarns. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur Jackson Lewis; three sisters; and four brothers.

Survivors include her daughter, Kay L. Lewis and husband, Guy, of Denver; sister, Nellie Ruth Cooper; and a granddaughter.

Frances Wilkie Phillips

MOORESVILLE – Frances “Lib” Wilkie Phillips, 79, died June 11, 2018. 

She was born Nov. 14, 1938, in Ellenboro to the late George R. Wilkie and Ester Greene Wilkie.  

She was preceded in death by her husband, Larry Phillips.  

She was a homemaker. 

Survivors include her children, Scott Phillips and wife, Joanne, Steve Phillips and wife, Carolyn and Linda Taylor and husband, Keith; sister, Joyce Padgett; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services were to be held June 13 at the Cavin-Cook Funeral Home chapel with burial at Glenwood Memorial Park.

Steven Alan Schapiro

MOORESVILLE – Steven Alan Schapiro, 70, died June 10, 2018, at his residence. 

He was born Dec. 11, 1947, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to the late Solomon and Lillian Gong Schapiro.

He worked for the Marriott Corporation, was general manager of multiple Connecticut hotels and served as president of the National Hotel Motel Association.  

Survivors include his wife, Teresa Hicks Schapiro; children, Brad Schapiro and Lora Schapiro; brother, Jay Schapiro and sister, Carol Schapiro. 

Services were held June 13 at Cavin-Cook Funeral Home, and a graveside service was held June 15 at National Memorial Park, Falls Church, Va. 

Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
