MOUNT MOURNE – Pine Lake Prep has hired Austin Trotter to take over as head football coach after Brett Hayford stepped down from the position Feb. 6.
Hayford, whose team went 4-7 last season and had a record of 29-29 over five seasons, will remain the school’s athletic director.
“In my mind, I couldn’t do everything I needed to do football-wise,” Hayford said Feb. 8.
Trotter has coaching experience at several schools in the north Mecklenburg and Lake Norman areas. He was the offensive coordinator in 2018 at Lake Norman Charter, where Bob McKay became head coach in January to take over for Mark Steele. Trotter also has previous stops at Northside Christian in Charlotte, Lake Norman High and North Meck.
“He knows what charter schools are about,” Hayford said.
The Pride has run the Wing-T offense, and Hayford said he hopes Trotter will “bring some new flavor” to the team.
The Pride rushed for more than 1,800 yards last season and eclipsed 2,000 in 2017, but Steele said Trotter’s style is more pass-oriented.
“He definitely likes to throw the ball,” said Steele, who is still on staff at LNC. “It’s going to be a new, fun start for those kids over there.”
