The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office is recommending felony arson charges against a 14-year-old student after a video allegedly showing him starting a fire in a garbage can at Lake Norman High School was shared extensively on social media.

Deputies and firefighters responded April 17 to a report of a smoke-filled second-floor hallway. They found the contents of a trash can in a boys bathroom burning, and extinguished the fire.

Students and staff members were evacuated when fire alarms were activated.

A student captured video of the fire being set and posted it on Snapchat, the sheriff’s office said in a press release, which added that “the video immediately became viral.”

“Sheriff’s office investigators quickly identified the suspect who set the fire, and the person who videotaped the incident,” the release said.

The sheriff’s office said it is recommending felony arson charges against the student, who was not identified because he is a juvenile. The student has been suspended from school.
