DAVIDSON – After 32 years of consistency, altering the practice schedule wasn’t a serious consideration, but Davidson College men’s basketball coach Bob McKillop did, immediately after practice, attend a ceremony in his honor at the town board’s Feb. 8 meeting.

A resolution – drafted by Davidson graduate and current Commissioner Jane Campbell – honoring McKillop for coaching his 1,000th game at Davidson was on the agenda.

The resolution did not reference the 638 wins, 14 regular-season conference titles, eight conference tournament championships and nine NCAA Tournament trips Davidson has made during his tenure, or that his last season with more losses than wins was 21 years ago or the Wildcats’ current 21-4 record and status atop the Atlantic 10 Conference standings.

It focused instead on McKillop’s commitment to the college, his players and the community, and his recognized and respected status – boosted by recruiting visits and team trips to all parts of the world – as “the college and the town’s unofficial international ambassador-at-large.”
