Doyle Leonard Payne

ALEXIS – Doyle Leonard Payne, 71, died March 26, 2020.

He was born May 28, 1948, in Mecklenburg County to the late Smith Leonard Payne and Catherine Sue Moss Payne. 

He was a U.S. Army veteran and worked for Freightliner as a mechanic.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Ricky Payne, and sister, Carolyn Sellers. 

Survivors include his wife, Virginia “Anne” Helderman Payne; daughters, Lynn Payne and Amy Payne Funderburk and husband, Johnny, of Alexis; brother, Tommy Payne and wife, Judy; sister-in-law, Martha Helderman of Alexis; two granddaughters; and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be held privately at a later date.

Robert A. Fisher

MAIDEN – Robert A. Fisher, 79, died March 26, 2020, at Carolina Caring of Newton.

He was born Nov. 26, 1940, in Lincoln County to the late Robert Andrew and Evelyn Smith Fisher.

He served in the Army National Guard and retired from Cochran Furniture in Lincolnton.

Survivors include his wife, Judy Houk Fisher; daughter, Cathy Williams and husband; Lorie Homesley and husband, Clifford, of Lincolnton; brothers, Joel Fisher and wife, Sue, of Lincolnton, and Fred Fisher of Lincolnton; and five grandchildren.

A private graveside service will be held at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Philip Ray Wainscott

DENVER – Philip Ray Wainscott, 76, died March 25, 2020, at Abernethy Laurels.

He was born July 5, 1943, in Georgetown, K.Y., to the late William Wainscott and Mary Edwards Wainscott.

He also was preceded in death by his brother, Donald Wainscott.

Survivors include his mother; wife, Marilyn Enochs Wainscott; sons, Mark Wainscott and wife, Laura, of Denver, Eric Wainscott and wife, Jennifer; daughter, Shelly Ferrari and husband, Bob;

Brother, Eugene Wainscott and wife, Nancy; sister, Marsha Wainscott; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Gary E. Preston

SHERRILLS FORD – Gary E. Preston, 75, died March 25, 2020.

He was born in Albuquerque, N.M., to the late Charles E. and Pauline A. Mount Preston.

He worked in finance, including with Siemens and The Bank of New York in Manhatten.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara and her son, Jesse Brown; daughters, Sherry McCabe and fiancé, Darryl Coleman, and Kendra Hood and husband, Robert; sister Sandra Bennett and husband, Vern; and three grandchildren.

Services will be held at a later date in New Jersey.

Cecil Audrey Flowers Jr.

LINCOLNTON – Cecil Audrey Flowers Jr., 85, died March 22, 2020.

He was born Sept. 21, 1934, in Mecklenburg County to the late Cecil Audrey Flowers and Velma Bynum Flowers.

He was the owner-operator of Cecil’s Slaw.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Doris Shuford Flowers.

Survivors include his son, Eddie Flowers and wife, Janet, of Lincolnton; daughter, Jenny Gunter and husband, Scott, of Lincolnton; and five grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held privately.
