Area students selected for South Central District Honors Band




 

 

LAKE NORMAN – Five students in area schools were recently selected for the 2015 South Central District Honors Band by audition.

Nearly 2,000 students in a ten-county area auditioned for spots in four bands.

The students attended the South Central District Honors Band Clinic on Jan. 30-31 in Hickory, N.C. The conductors included David Stroud from North Carolina, William Owens from Texas, Brian Balmages from Maryland and Robert Sheldon from Illinois.

Andrew Novitt, trumpet player from Bradley Middle School under the direction of Rick Owens, was selected for the Middle School Concert Band.

Brooke Cardwell and Caitlyn Haponik, flautists from Bailey Middle School under the direction of Ruth Petersen, were selected for the Middle School Symphonic Band.

Emily Modrow, clarinetist from William A. Hough High School under the direction of Rob Carrington, was selected for the High School Band.

Katarina Schuette, flautist from William A. Hough High School under the direction of Rob Carrington, was selected for the Senior High School Band.

The Middle School Symphonic Band premiered a new piece by William Owens entitled “Yonaguska”, which is about the last great chief of the Cherokee. The Senior High School Band premiered a new piece, “Piedmont Festival Overture”, by Robert Sheldon.
