Furnishings, food and fellowship scream Irish pub

CORNELIUS – You want an authentic Irish pub, but you want it on this side of the Atlantic.

This authentic Irish pub, along with the bar, was deconstructed in the Galway Bay area of Ireland to be moved to our area. The Galway Hooker comes complete with two well-used Galway Hookers suspended from the ceiling – small working boats suitable for serious fishing – and underfoot a stone flooring embedded with ancient sea fossils. This wee bit of Ireland and its antiques are all imported directly from the motherland.

What better way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day than to be surrounded by treasures of the past.

Whenever my husband and I get a hankering for some truly tasty Irish fare, we head for The Galway Hooker within hailing distance of the southern end of Lake Norman. What would the convivial Irish do without their beloved pubs? Whether you’ve got something to celebrate or have hit a rough patch in the road, it’s time to settle into a dark pint of Guinness and think sweet Irish thoughts.

St. Patrick’s Day on March 17 is a fine time to wear green and celebrate the Galway Hooker’s 11th anniversary.

Hungry? How about a hearty portion of Dublin fries – hand cut fries topped with cheddar and jack cheese, crisp bangers (imported sausages), diced tomatoes and green onions finished with Jameson Irish whiskey gravy?

• Diana Gleasner and her husband, Bill, have written two books about the Lake Norman area.

Want to go? Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with an indoor/outdoor block party noon March 15 and 8 a.m. March 17 at the Galway Hooker Restaurant & Irish Bar, 17044 Kenton Drive, Cornelius. Details: www.galwayhookerpub.com or 704-895-1782.
