Amid a holiday sweep, the Mooresville boys (8-1) won the Iredell County Holiday Classic. Senior guard/forward Christian Herring had a monster game in the 72-69 finals win over Rocky River. He scored 28 points with 13 rebounds, while K.C. Shaw notched a double-double himself with 21 points and 15 boards.

Coach Armard Moore said it was the best game Herring has played in a Blue Devils uniform.

“Big kudos for our other guys finding him,” he said. “I also think Christian is starting to figure it out, understand what we’re asking of him. Just be coachable, just listen. and we’ll put him in the right situations to be successful.”

The game before, Mooresville found itself in a 15-2 first-quarter hole against a big, physical North Iredell team. But Moore’s squad climbed back to advance to the finals.

“Our guys settled down a little bit, and played Mooresville basketball,” he said.

Since Mooresville first-round game was canceled, it only took two wins to take the title. Prior to Christmas, the Blue Devils got their first holiday win by taking town Leesville Road in a John Wall Invitational showcase game. Shaw scored 17 with 8 rebounds and 5 assists on a day that the team made the five-hour round trip. It was all worth it for Moore.

“The atmosphere, everything about the game was great,” he said. “It had college coaches watching our guys, great commentating. Just a great tournament feel, one of the best in the country.”

Heading into January, the Blue Devils have already won more games than the last two seasons combined.
