UPDATE: CES student struck by vehicle discharged from hospital

CORNELIUS – A Cornelius Elementary School student was struck by a vehicle during morning arrival Thursday, according to Principal Jessica Holbrook.

Holbrook’s message noted first responders arrived quickly and immediately provided aid to the student. A subsequent report issued later in the day stated the student had been discharged from the hospital and “is doing very well.”

In light of the situation, Holbrook took the time to issue a reminder about walking zones and safety measures at the school.

“CMS or the town of Cornelius does not provide a cross walk or police support on School Street and areas behind the school because it has never been approved as a walking zone by CMS transportation,” she said in the release. “This means it has been deemed those students will be assigned a bus for safe travel to and from school. We have sent out several emails to families recently asking for increased safety measures. We have repainted the cross walk in the drop-off zone for better visuals and PTO has bought extra signs to remind drivers about our logistics when dropping off and picking up students.”

“It is school policy that no student is left unattended at any time,” the release continues. “Parents must make sure that if students walk to school, they are accompanied by an adult. Also, if you drop your child off before 8:15 a.m., you are breaking school policy as the child is unattended outside of school hours. Allowing students to walk to school unattended is a serious safety violation. As of our most recent list from CMS transportation, we have zero students assigned to our walker/no transportation zone, meaning all students are eligible for a bus and no students are considered to live in a safe zone to walk, with or without a crossing guard.”
