Cornelius woman recognized for providing college scholarships to area moms

Susan Harper

CORNELIUS – Town resident Susan Harper recently received the 2022 N.C. Governor’s Volunteer Service Award recognizing individuals who have made a significant contribution to their community and the state through volunteer service.

Harper began volunteering with ANSWER Scholarship when she and her husband, Dennis Lynch, moved to Bailey’s Glen eight years ago. ANSWER provides college scholarships to mothers of school-age children in Charlotte, also assisting with mentoring as well as professional and career development.

During her tenure, Harper was responsible for starting a professional development program for ANSWER, and she redesigned much of the infrastructure, adding committees and volunteers to position the agency for significant growth and recognition in the community. ANSWER has grown from helping just four scholars in 2006 to 23 in 2022-23. Scholarship awards have grown from $1,200 to $5,000, and ANSWER has currently more than 60 volunteers.

Just before retiring from her role as Governing Board Chair last December, Harper completed a strategic planning process which resulted in a new mission and vision as well as specific goals and strategies to help ANSWER continue to help area moms.
