CSD, LN Charter boys swim to regional titles

Hough girls 2nd in 4A West

CHARLOTTE – The reigning state champion Hough girls finished second overall at the 4A West swimming regional Feb. 5 at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center.

Behind two silver-medal performances in relays and a first-place from a state record holder, the Huskies scored 273 points, behind regional champ Myers Park’s 357.5. They finished second in the 200 medley relay in 1:45.86 – edging Lake Norman High – with the efforts of Riche Putnam, Grace Rainey, Clarke Neace and Kyra Tonsil, as well as in the 400 freestyle relay (3:30.40) via Neace, Tonsil, Rainey and Morgan Razewski.

Meanwhile, Lake Norman was fifth overall with 217 points. The Wildcats were third in the 200 medley relay, just 0.13 behind Hough, via Alyssa Claborn, Hanani Dona, Emma Stolberg and Caitlin Horn.

Hough senior Razewski was runner-up in the 200 freestyle in 1:51.03, while Neace, a freshman, was fifth in 1:52.78. The latter also took fourth in the 500 freestyle.

Rainey was the champion of the 100 breaststroke, clocking in at 1:02.39. She and her sister Reagan took third and fourth in the 200 individual medley, swimming 2:03.22 and 2:04.98.

Tonsil was fourth in the 50 freestyle (24.12).

In the 1-meter diving competition, Hough’s Ava Gilroy finished fourth with 425.4 points, while Lake Norman’s Shea Herrick was fifth with 421.7.

The Wildcats picked up gold in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:36.28 via Horn, Sophia Bellissimo, Claborn and Stolberg.

Stolberg was third in the 500 freestyle in 5:02.01 and fourth in the 100 butterfly (56.67). Claborn, a freshman, finished fourth in the 100 backstroke (55.85).

Mooresville’s Julianna Morrow was 16th in the 200 freestyle.

Dean Treanor led the Hough boys with a first-place regional finish in diving with 525.05. Teammate Bobby Frye was third in the 100 butterfly in 51.56 seconds, and freshman Nikita Shulgin was fifth in the 100 backstroke in 53.79.

North Meck sophomore Preston Luong was 11th in both the 50 and 100 freestyle.

Knights capture 3A West

The Lake Norman Charter boys were champions of the 3A West region, while the girls were runners-up.

The Knights took the top two spots in diving. Hayden Schroeder was first with 530.1 points, while Sean O’Dell scored 496.3.

LNC was second in two relays: the 400 freestyle in 3:16.83 with the team of Lane Bradshaw, Graham Powers, Justin Gould and Harrison Ranier, as well as the 200 medley from Kyle Hawkins, Devin Buckler, Ethan Hill and James Burroughs.

Buckler was second in the 100 freestyle in 49.53 and fourth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:03.86. Hawkins took fifth in the 200 freestyle (57.59), and Hill was fourth in the 100 free (50.29).

Denver-area swimmers went one-two in the 50 free. Zachary Clendenning of East Lincoln was first in 22.75 seconds, while North Lincoln’s Kyle Heise clocked in just behind at 22.92. Clendenning was runner-up in the 100 freestyle in 55.70, and Heise was third in the 100 free (50.28).

LNC’s girls also took silver in two relays. The Lady Knights were runners-up in the 200 medley relay in 1:57.84 from Kristina Rooney, Presley Horton, Addison Lasarsky and Anika Kolano, then the 200 freestyle relay in 1:45.04 from Megan Wozniak, Rooney, Horton and Kolano. Madi Varnum also snagged gold after her score of 462.7 in diving.

Horton was second in the 100 breaststroke, clocking in at 1:10.51, and fifth in the 200 individual medley (2:18.11).

They were fifth in the 400 freestyle relay, finishing in 4:01.99.

East Lincoln’s Devin Poteat was second in the 100 freestyle in 55.21 and third in the 200 individual medley (2:15.75).

CSD, charters dominate 1A/2A

Members of the Catawba Shores conference swept the top five girls spots and top three boys in the 1A/2A West Regional. 

Pine Lake Prep won the girls with 382 points, ahead of second-place Lincoln Charter’s 314 and Christ the King’s 239.

The Pride’s Larissa Munksgard was second in the diving behind the 604 points from three-time state champion Joslyn Oakley from Langtree Charter. Langtree’s Sydney Soto was third.

PLP finished third in the 200 medley relay in 1:55.88 via the efforts of Scarlett Duncan, Kristina Dontino, Sophie Storie and Campbell Kolbay.

The Lincoln Charter girls won two relays and picked up silver in another. The Eagles won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:42.95 with Jade and Norah Chamblee, Gianna D’Amato and Grace Wilson, and in the 400 freestyle with Wilson, D’Amato, Jade Chamblee and Brooklyn DeCann. They were second in the 200 medley relay in 1:56.75 with the Chamblees, DeCann and Wilson.

Wilson took gold in the 200 freestyle, clocking in at 1:57.82, while Jade Chamblee took third (2:01.61). 

Norah Chamblee was second in the 100 butterfly in 1:02.75 and 200 individual medley in 2:17.21, followed by DeCann in 2:18.38. 

DeCann took silver in the 500 freestyle, clocking in at 5:31.85, while D’Amato was third in the 100 backstroke in 1:03.35.

Community School of Davidson’s Eliana White was first in the 50 freestyle in 23.95 and the 100 free (52.23). The Spartans were runners-up in the 200 freestyle relay (1:43.37) and 400 freestyle relay (3:46.63) with Celia Brown, Meredith Tucker, Melia Brown and White.

Tucker took gold in the 200 individual medley in 2:14.66 and 100 breaststroke (1:09.61).

Leading Christ the King’s third-place performance, Catherine Walsh was second in the 100 backstroke in 1:02.86, while Heather Duckworth was third in the 100 breaststroke in 1:13.75.

CSD dominated the boys regional title with 387 points, outpacing Pine Lake (258.5) and Mountain Island Charter (248). Baylor Nelson took gold in the 200 individual medley in 1:51.03 and 100 butterfly (50.02), and was followed by a teammate in both. Austin Hartsell finished second in the 200 IM (2:06.15), and Jacob Navarro was runner-up in the fly (55.31).

The Spartans won both the 200 and 400 freestyle relay via Aidan Lee, Hartsell, Riley Hall and Nelson in the former, then Luke Weber, Will Ballard, Navarro and Nelson.

Pine Lake’s Noah Humphrey was runner-up in the 500 freestyle in 5:18.19. Henry Shook was third in the 200 IM, clocking in at 2:11.77.

The Pride were third in the 200 freestyle relay (1:35.31) with Nathan Tran, Jackson Long, Shook and Owen Sypolt.

Connor MacDermott of Langtree Charter finished fifth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.62. He is the school’s first swimmer, boys or girls, to qualify for the state championship.

Lincoln Charter’s Alex Givens dominated 1-meter diving with 517.70.

The Eagles were third in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:40.06 via Ryan Hughes, Henry Powell, Russell Chamblee and Lucas Malta.

CTK’s top boys performance came from Jacob Pote, who took fourth in the 100 backstroke.
