Nellie Sue Leatherman Harrill

LINCOLNTON – Nellie Sue Leatherman Harrill, 84, died Sept. 3, 2019.

She was born Nov. 19, 1934, in Lincoln County to the late Hal and Vera Dellinger Leatherman.  

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Alexander Harrill. 

Survivors include her sons, Michael Harrill and wife, Amanda, and Jeff “Bo” Harrill and wife, Rhonda, of Lincolnton; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services were held Sept. 5 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church.

Christina Stephanie Hedspeth

LINCOLNTON – Christina Stephanie Hedspeth, 30, died Sept. 2, 2019.

She was born June 4, 1989, in Gaston County to James Randy Chaney and Sandra Causby Chaney.  

Survivors include her parents; daughter, Autumn Hedspeth of Lincolnton; sisters, April Lehman and husband, Walt, and Katrina Cloninger and husband, John; and grandmother, Shirley McGinnis of Lincolnton.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, at Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church.

Doris Holland Bowen

DALLAS – Doris Holland Bowen, 84, died Sept. 2, 2019.

She was born Dec. 7, 1934, in Franklin County, Ala., to the late Albert and Elma Pitts Holland.

She worked in textiles.

Survivors include her husband, Lewis Bowen; sons, Kevin Bowen of Lincolnton and Tony Bowen of the home; daughter, Leslie Bowen; sister, Kay Saxton; and six grandchildren.

Services were held Sept. 5 at New Bethel Independent Baptist Church in Gastonia.

Mary Sue Smith Holler

LINCOLNTON – Mary Sue Smith Holler, 85, died Sept. 1, 2019, at Abernethy Laurels in

Newton.

She was born July 1, 1934, in Gaston County to the late Fred and Arie Smith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Holler.

Survivors include her daughter, Sherry Sipe of Lincolnton.

No services will be held at this time.

Bill Ray McMurry

DENVER – Bill Ray McMurry, 82, died Aug. 31, 2019, at Brian Center in Lincolnton.

He was born June 5, 1937, in Cleveland County to the late Nannie Pearl Dover McMurry.

He retired from Caldwell’s Meat Processing in Maiden.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Pauline Dellinger.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Loftin McMurry; daughter, Donna McMurry of Lincolnton; son, Ray McMurry and wife, Kathy, of Denver; sister, Mary Helen Black; and two grandchildren.

Services were held Sept. 3 at Amity Baptist Church.

Troyleen Jewel Hester

LINCOLNTON – Troyleen Jewel Hester, 82, died Aug. 30, 2019.

She was born July 6, 1937, in Caldwell County to the late Boyd and Rosie Chester Teasley.  

She was preceded in death by her husband, Odell Hester.

Survivors include her sons, John D. Hester and David Hester.

Services will be held at a later date.

Mildred Ward

MAIDEN – Mildred Lucille Martin Ward, 93, died Aug. 29, 2019, at CaraMont Regional Medical Center in Gastonia.

She was born July 29, 1926, in Catawba County to the late Arch and Alice Martin.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Earl Ward; brothers, Howard Martin and Tom Martin; sisters, Ruth Queen and Edna Campbell; and daughter-in-law, Beverly Canipe Ward.

Survivors include her son, Steve Ward of Lincolnton; daughter, Tanna Ward Phipps and husband, Bill; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services were held Sept. 1 at Living Word Church.

Robert Michael Shanklin

DENVER – Robert Michael Shanklin, 62, died Aug. 24, 2019.

He was born May 17, 1957, in Charlotte to the late Walt Shanklin and Florence Soule Shanklin.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Ronnie Shanklin and Pat Shanklin.

Survivors include his sisters, Mary Brown and husband, Ron, of Denver, Alice Greene and husband, Jimmy, of Lincolnton, and Linda Elliott and husband, Rick; brothers, Mark Shanklin and wife, Michele, of Denver, and Jeff Shanklin.

Services were held privately.

Elmina Howie

STANLEY – Elmina Jones Howie, 90, died Aug. 22, 2019.

She was born April 19, 1929, in Lincoln County to the late Houston and Lucille Jones.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Sidney G. Jones, and son-in-law, Dennis Sims.

Survivors include her son, Eddie Howie and fiancée, Misty, of Stanley; daughters, Dorthy Sims, Jenny Huskins and husband, Mike, Dora Modlin and husband, Bruce, of Iron Station, and Barbara Carter and husband, Steve, of Denver; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services were held Aug. 26 at James Funeral Home. Burial was at Salem United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Sherrill’s Ford Hospice House or the Alzheimer’s Foundation.
