James Short 

DENVER – James Kenneth Short, 78, of Denver died Dec. 3, 2022.

He was born Oct. 13, 1944, in Middletown, Ohio, to the late Mary Kay Short and Kenneth Short.

He served his country in Vietnam and retired from property management and became a priest.

He was preceded in death by his uncle, Bob Short, and brother, Paul Short.

He is survived by his brother, Mike Short; godchildren, Robert and Russell Helma; and many friends, relatives, nieces and nephews.

Service times are to be determined.

Randy Alan Howie

STANLEY – Randy Alan Howie, 66, of Stanley died Nov. 26, 2022.

He was born on June 22, 1956, in Charlotte to Janet Howie and the late John Howie. 

He retired as a service manager for McCall Brothers Inc. of Charlotte.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his brother, Carroll Howie.

He is survived by his wife, Tess; son, Marc Howie and wife, Jane; mother, Janet Hager Howie; brother, Johnny Howie and wife, Kathy; sister-in-law, Amy; grandchildren, Isabella Thompson, Elisa and Dennis Sprouse, Dakota and Evan Gibson; and great-grandchildren Adna, Hank, Emry, Wesleigh and Callum.

A memorial service was held Dec. 4 at Hills Chapel United Methodist Church in Stanley.

Kurt Hartfeil

DENVER – Kurt Hartfeil, 100, of Denver, formerly of Charlotte and various northern suburbs of Chicago, died Nov. 24, 2022.

He was born Nov. 9, 1922, in Gruental Volhynia (Ukraine).

He worked as a brick mason until his retirement, owned The Artis Beauty Salon and continued to work tiling and building fireplaces after retirement.

He is survived by his wife Elsa Wolff Hartfeil; children, Karl-Heinz and Guenther and wife, Karen Metzger; grandchildren, Lauren Merryman and husband, Gregg, Kurt and wife, Lisa, Robin Jake Genwun Moy and wife, Lily; great-grandchildren, Fiona, Landon and Margot; sister, Gisela Stenger; and numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces residing in Germany.
