The skinny: Community School of Davidson fell behind 31-0 last week before rallying with 16 fourth-quarter points. The passing game worked well late, but the Spartans need to tighten their line play. The offense was stymied by allowing three sacks in the first half, and the defense allowed 308 rushing yards. First Assembly has a new coach (Craig Kean). The Eagles were 5-5 last season, after being state champions in 2009, 2010 and 2011.

North Raleigh Christian was shut out in its opener last week.

Lake Norman (0-1) at Hopewell (1-0)

Last meeting: Hopewell won 45-24 last season.

Players to watch: LN – QB Josh Ladowski, WR Corey Joyner, LB Drew Lambert; Hopewell – WR Dominique Heath, RB Dimitris Camp, QB Jerry Chadwick

The skinny: Hopewell’s offense was in high gear in the opener last week, and won its first game under new coach Matt Jenkins. Chadwick was 7-of-7 passing for 199 yards. Heath caught three passes for 126 yards and two touchdowns. Camp rushed for 108 yards and three scores on only four carries. Lake Norman played tough in a loss to North Mecklenburg, but can’t afford to fall behind early again.

Mooresville (1-0) at Hough (1-0)

Time: 7 p.m. Aug. 30

Last meeting: Hough won 38-14 last season.

Players to watch: Hough – DB Akeem Barringer, RB Tylan Murrell, WR Justin Koenig;

Mooresville – QB Tommy Bullock, RB Akease Rankin, RB Manny Johnson

The skinny: Both teams were impressive in their openers. Each scored five touchdowns. Mooresville bumped off perennial power West Rowan and Hough won at Providence. These are former I-MECK 4A conference foes who’ve moved to different conferences this season. Both defenses will be tested, and this could turn into a high-scoring affair. Hough will try to snap a two-game home losing streak.

Independence (1-0) at North Mecklenburg (1-0)

Time: 7 p.m. Aug. 30

Last meeting: Independence won 41-13 last season.

Players to watch: North Meck – RB William Santiago, DB Avery Jones, WR Stephen Langford; Independence – QB Kelvin Hopkins, RB Isaiah Robinson, WR Workpeh Kofa

The skinny: North Mecklenburg hopes to parlay its enthusiasm from the victory in the season opener. It’ll be a tough task against Independence, which scored 49 in its first game. North Meck’s Santiago rushed for 102 yards and Nolan Beasley threw two touchdown passes. The Vikings defense will have to contain Independence running back Isaiah Robinson and quarterback Hopkins, who was 20-of-24 passing for 376 yards and four touchdowns last week.

SouthLake Christian (1-0) at Victory Christian (0-1)

Time: 7:30 p.m. Aug. 30

Last meeting: Victory Christian won 26-21 in the state championship last season.

Players to watch: SouthLake – WR Connor O’Donnell, OL Blake Queen, LB Grant Bushinski; VC – RB Joshua Allen, QB Jordan Lane, WR Michael Holmes

The skinny: SouthLake Christian’s opener last week turned into a forfeit when Westminster Catawba didn’t have enough players. This will be a rematch of last year’s state championship. SouthLake is loaded with offensive weapons and a coaching staff that loves to deploy them all. Victory Christian led 18-10 after three quarters against Providence Day, but lost 23-18.
