Hough overcomes mistakes, dominates Mooresville

CORNELIUS – Even after a convincing win, Hough High coach Bobby Collins had a message for his team Friday night.

“Two fumbles and one interception. We’ve got to stop turning the football over,” Collins said after his Huskies beat Mooresville High 45-14 for their second straight win over the Blue Devils.

Hough quarterback Josh Stilley, wide receiver Caleb Hines and cornerback Mark Fields III, gave Collins plenty to be happy about. Stilley led the Huskies (2-0) to a 17-0 halftime lead as he worked against an ineffective Mooresville pass rush.

“Hats off to Josh and Caleb,” Collins said. “The offensive line did a good job protecting. (Mooresville) got to the quarterback a couple times but Josh did a good job making some things happen for us.”

Mooresville (1-1) struggled to establish any consistency on offense. The Blue Devils didn’t score until cornerback Chris Ingram returned a fumble 55 yards for a score in the third quarter. By then, Hough had already scored 31 points.

Fields electrified the home crowd with a 69-yard punt return for a touchdown prior to Ingram’s score. Mooresville didn’t enter the end zone on offense until quarterback Tommy Bullock scored on a 12-yard run with 38 seconds left.

The Blue Devils entered the game with momentum from a season-opening 35-21 win over West Rowan High, but Mooresville coach Hal Capps said his team showed it still has plenty of work to do.

“We did not play well because Hough played well, attacked us and took it to us,” Capps said. “Good teams will expose you. We just didn’t get on the board (in time). We’ve got a lot of work to do and a long way to go.”

Aside from the three turnovers, Collins said his team’s performance spoke volumes about the kind of strong statement Hough wanted to make against Mooresville.

“Coach Capps coaches a really good football team,” Collins said.

“It was a really big win for our program. We’ve just got to continue to build from it.”
