Birkdale Village hosts children’s author McGinness

HUNTERSVILLE – Birkdale Village will welcome Suzanne F. McGinness as an artist in residence to the shopping center on Sept. 14.

McGinness, author and illustrator of “My Bear Griz,” is working on a new e-book that will feature a Birkdale Village and North Carolina chapter.

The chapter will be inspired by words, stories and artwork from customers and employees of Birkdale Village.

Anyone between the ages of 10 – 21 with a passion for creating art is welcome to join in a creative session at 1 p.m. Sept. 14.

Latta Plantation hosts Revolutionary War re-enactment

HUNTERSVILLE – Historic Latta Plantation demonstrates why Cornwallis called Charlotte a “hornet’s nest of opposition” through a war re-enactment.

The event takes place 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Aug. 31-Sept. 1 at Historic Latta Plantation on Sample Road.

On Aug. 31, re-enactors will fight the Battle of Charlotte, which originally occurred at the corner of Trade and Tryon streets. Sept. 1 will feature the Battle of McIntyre Farm, which took place only a few miles from Latta, off Beatties Ford Road. The main battle begins at 2 p.m. each day.

Visitors can visit the plantation home, see the soldier camps, enjoy numerous demonstrations and take in a hot meal from Appalachian Smoke.

Admission costs $8. Ages 5 and younger get in free.

The BackBeat plays on the green

DAVIDSON – The BackBeat, a group known for playing cover songs of The Beatles’, will perform the next installment of the Concerts on the Green series.

The group takes pride reproducing the songs as true to the originals as possible, including 3- and 4-part vocal harmonies.

The concert takes place 6-8 p.m. Sept. 1 on the Village Green at the corner of Main Street and Concord Road.

Nonprofits organize film screening

DAVIDSON – Two nonprofits will hold a screening of the film, “Playing with Magic,” which explores how people find healing from playing with horses.

Triple Play Farm offers equine-facilitated psychotherapy as an alternative to traditional talk therapy. All We Want is LOVE fights modern-day slavery.

Both hope proceeds from the screening allow four survivors of sex trafficking in Charlotte the opportunity to attend a six-week equine-facilitated therapy program at Triple Play Farm.

The screening starts at 7 p.m. Sept. 19 at Our Towns Cinemas.

Tickets cost $15 in advance or $20 at the door.

Outdoor movie postponed due to rain

CORNELIUS – The Cornelius Parks, Arts, Recreation and Culture Department rescheduled its Aug. 17 outdoor screening of “Madagascar 3” due to bad weather.

The department will screen the film on its inflatable “blimp” screen at dusk Sept. 7 at Aquesta Bank, 19510 Jetton Road. Refreshments will be available to buy.

Bring lawn chairs and blankets.

Children can explore butterflies

DAVIDSON – Chris Paradise, an associate professor of biology and environmental studies at Davidson College, and his students will explore the world of butterflies 10:30 a.m.-noon Sept. 7.

The free nature outing is open to children (at leas 4 years old) and their families.

The program is offered through World of Wonder, a nature discovery program for children with their families. Davidson Lands Conservancy and Woodland Discovery sponsor WOW.

Improv group holds back-to-school show

CORNELIUS – The Chuckleheads, a Charlotte improvisational theatre group, present its Back to School Comedy Improv Musical Variety Extravaganza

Each show will include back-to-school-themed unscripted improvisational comedy games, musical games/activities, game show elements, and the heavy-duty audience participation. Prizes will be raffled off during the show as a fundraiser.

The event takes place at 6 and 8 p.m. Sept. 21 at the Warehouse Performing Arts Center, 9216-A Westmoreland Road. The 6 p.m. show will be family friendly. It will be followed by an 8 p.m. show that could contain some adult language and situations.

Tickets cost $10 in advance or $15 at the door.
