Lincoln County leaders: ‘Let’s continue working together’

Editor’s note: The following message was issued Thursday by the Lincoln County Board of Commissioners and county manager’s office.

County officials continue to convene briefings and virtual meetings around the impact of COVID-19 on Lincoln County and its community.

Several important issues including health, individual responsibility and economic tension remain at the forefront. County officials remain sensitive to the difficult decisions meeting these challenges imposed by this epidemic.

The modifications enacted on our community have been challenging and unfamiliar. However, the citizens of this county continue to be a strong and supportive community. A community known to help each other in times of need while respecting individual freedoms.

The onset of the epidemic has altered many of the routines that our citizens are most familiar (with). This virus has impacted our health, our wages, our businesses, our mental health and our liberties.

While we find ourselves in difficult positions with schools, daycares and businesses closed or operating in a limited capacity, we must remember that we are a resilient community that has demonstrated our determination to overcome adversity. The citizens of this county continue following the social distancing guidance and are closely monitoring their health conditions. Practically everyone has put frequent hand-washing at the top of their daily routines. Most have limited their travel and frequency of travel to minimize a risk exposure.

Everyone is thinking about those that are most vulnerable and helping to keep them safer. Businesses have increased their cleaning and disinfecting activities to protect customers. Local businesses impacted by partial or full closures have acted responsibly in managing efforts to reduce the potential spread of this virus; they have shown understanding and our citizens continue to provide support through purchases.

This challenge will continue for a while longer, although, it will not be forever. An epidemic like this will have cycles as more exposures and illnesses occur. Its duration will seem longer and harsher to some than it will to others; however, it requires everyone to be mindful of how serious this situation can be. We will protect our community to our best ability, with continued effort on our community’s part.

This remains simple but vitally important: continuing to stay home if feeling ill, washing hands and maintaining good social distancing behavior. The efforts of our community to reduce the spread of this virus is greatly appreciated. It takes all of us doing our part to minimize the possibility of additional impacts. Please continue making responsible decisions and know we will get through this together.

Finally, county officials are committed to making sure we carefully analyze what steps or measures should be considered for keeping Lincoln County employees and citizens safe during COVID-19. While the news of this virus is the primary cause of unsettled emotions, it is very important to know the facts. County officials will continue working proactively to maintain a safe workplace and continue closely monitoring this rapidly changing situation. Let’s continue working together and maintaining a sense of calm.
